Salem Art Works Schedules Outdoor Campus Fundraiser Event
Anthony Cafritz's '85 Salem Art Works will hold "A Movable Feast" on the above date. The annual fundraiser will be catered by Panagea Restaurant of Bennington, Vt. The three-course dinner will be served outdoors at three different locations throughout their campus among the rolling blue hills of the 120-acre public sculpture park at 19 Cary Lane. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to supporting S.A.W.'s programming and artist residencies in 2009, as well as making improvements to the grounds and facilities of the arts center.
Appetizers will be passed around near the botanical labyrinth of morning glories and sunflowers created by Brooklyn/Woodstock-based artist Peter Barrett. New York City's Untyte will be the first performers of the evening. The group resurrects ancient Lithuanian polyphonic folk tunes. The first course will feature glassblowing demonstrations by Marc Barreda and Leif Johnson, instructors of glass workshops at S.A.W. The entree will be served on the lawn near the visitor's center, where diners will be served prime rib and Thai curry made with local, seasonal vegetables. Handmade and blown glass objects made at Glo will be auctioned off while artist John Umphlett, a professor of sculpture at Bennington College, demonstrates one of his interactive sculptures. At sundown, guests will be transported to the top of Cary Hill for the last course of the evening. At dusk, the internationally venerated singers Mary Chen and Yong Li, with piano accompaniment by Isabelle Williams, will bring in the night with a performance of traditional Chinese Opera Music.

Alumna to Present Tom's Wealth at Tsai Performance Center
Choreographer Caitlin Corbett '79 presents Tom's Wealth: A Dance for the Masses, an evening length piece for 35 performers: five Caitlin Corbett Dance Company dancers and 30 non-dancers (men, women, and children) based on text taken from Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer. Caitlin has been presenting work in the Boston area since 1984. Most recently, Caitlin has received a Fulbright fellowship to teach and create new choreographic work in Helsinki, Finland in the spring of 2009. Caitlin's early involvement with the leading voices of New York's avant-garde helped shape an aesthetic that juxtaposes the sublime beauty of everyday movement with the innovation of contemporary dance. Caitlin has danced with Johanna Boyce, Lisa Kraus, Wendy Perron, and Susan Rethorst. Her work has been shown in Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City. She has received commissions from Dance Umbrella and First Night as well as grants from the New England Foundation for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council and Cambridge Arts Council and a Carnegie Foundation Copper Scholarship. Caitlin is currently as Associate Professor at Salem State College where she teaches dance.
